Siew Says Trade Visit to New York 'meaningful'

Former Vice President Vincent Siew, who is heading a Taiwanese business delegation on a visit to the United States, called his two-day stay in New York “very meaningful.”

“I of course hope the visit can help further strengthen Taiwan-U.S. trade relations and Taiwan's participation in regional economic integration,” Siew said in response to a question from the media upon his arrival in Washington, D.C., the second stop on his trip.

“It was a great beginning ... but there won't be significant results after just one visit,” he said of his repeated appeals to business leaders from the two countries to create a CEO Summit that would serve as an institutionalized communication platform.

Siew, who indicated he last visited Washington six years ago, said he was now looking forward to his four-day stay in the U.S. capital.

While in Washington, D.C., Siew will give a keynote address at a public seminar hosted by the Brookings Institution that will examine Taiwan's prospects for entry into the Trans-Pacific...
